An American Soldier's Korean Journey Mr Donald Ray Borgman 9781442191198 Books Reviews
This book was written with honest thought and feeling about what it was like for a Christian boy to try and serve in the US Army as a CO (conscientious objector) during wartime, while holding onto his morals to not bear arms and kill fellow human beings. Mr. Borgman has managed to convey his feelings without any self-pride or self-pity. His journey is two-fold the first is the actual time spent in Korea as a soldier, the second is the journey to understanding why he was there, and how he coped with all the post-war trauma that war-time soldiers carry. We often hear that "Freedom is not free" - Mr. Borgman transforms those words into feelings. This is a personal journey that we,the general public, are privileged to get a little glimpse into.
I throughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it to everyone.
Young people will gain courage to stand for their own convictions when they see it can be done successfully.
Middle aged people will learn about a war that was fought in a little country in an attempt to stop the aggressive expanding of empires that set back in WW II but not totally quenched. We learn why we still have to resist enslavement of people we don't even know in order to keep freedom in the world.
Older people, and veterans from all our conflicts, will see how one man evaluates his time in the war and some will be fortunate enough to put their own ghosts to rest as Donald has.
Wonderful non-fiction. It's great to know the military can be served without carrying a gun and not be considered a "sissy".
Since we know this man we were especially interested to read his account of his time as a soldier. I liked it as he had no political path, or real judgments. It is just his story and how he felt he grew in that experience.
I ordered the first book for myself. My mom called me and asked for 2 more. One for her and one for my Aunt. Soon she called again and wanted a copy for her cousin. The writer mentions my Uncle Don Garland in the book a few times and his picture is in the book too. This book is special for our family. I hope it stays available because I know a few more family members may want a copy too. The Korean Journey from many perspectives is always a treasure. I haven't read the whole book yet from cover to cover but the family that has loves it. The seeds of prosperity was planted before the war in South Korea for the gospel of Christ and it is flourishing today because of those willing to lay down their lives for the cause.
